CMD-Malawi: Sharing lessons from fair, peaceful elections
Malawi voted on May 19th to re-elect president Bingu wa Mutharika's Democratic Progressive party, returning Mutharika to office with two thirds of the vote. It was one of Africa's most peaceful and fairly organised elections.
To take account and share lessons from an exemplary election, the CMD in Malawi along with a host of other partners organised a 'Democracy in Progress: Election Evaluation Conference' in Lilongwe on 22 June.
The four day conference analyzes and documents the electoral process and aims to provide a contribution to the development of the Electoral Commission's and donor's knowledge management systems.
The conference will report on the major decision makers and stakeholders in the electoral process and propose a set of electoral reforms based on the lessons learned and key findings taken from the experiences of the 2009 Elections.
The organizers have engaged experienced authors to analyze each of the major aspects of the Malawian elctoral process. The results, a well-founded academic assessment and fair interpretation of the 2009 Elections - will be compiled in an edited book and then distributed to all key stakeholders in Malawi.
